The right to know, the power to act

Freedom of Information

We’re laying the foundation for a Native-centered approach to transparency — one that puts tribal needs, access and sovereignty first.

Freedom of information is more than a legal principle—it’s a pathway to visibility, accountability and community power. At the Indigenous Media Freedom Alliance, we work to protect and expand this right, knowing that open access to public information allows Native communities to tell their own stories, challenge misinformation and advocate for meaningful change.

This page is a growing hub for tools and guidance related to press freedom and the public’s right to know. It includes legal resources, reporting examples, and practical strategies for accessing information that affects Native communities.
